9/16/14 Meeting

Hey everyone! We're so sorry about today's sudden location change, especially in this crazy heat. We'll try our best to plan in advance with Whelan (the theater teacher) next week!

Here's a recap of today's meeting:

1. October is just around the corner, which means Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF is going to begin very soon! We've got to order Trick-or-Treat boxes ASAP for them to arrive on time. Today we asked you guys to write down approximately how many boxes each of you want to fill up, just so that we can get a rough estimate of how many we have to order. You can fill up as many boxes as you want! Get a box for your church; for your favorite teacher so that they can put one in their classroom; for a local business that you know; etc. For those of you who are also part of NHS, we're going to set the bar to three boxes maximum. One service hour per box!

2. T-shirts! The design has been finalized, and each T-shirt is going to be $10We are going to start receiving money next Tuesday. Cash is preferred. We asked you all to put a check next to your name on one of the sign-in sheets to confirm that you want a T-shirt. But considering how hectic today was, I don't think some of you were able to do that. So, give us a quick reply to this email that you still want a T-shirt if you weren't able to notify us today!

3. I talked a little more in depth about hours today. I'm going to require 10 hours from each of you per semester, making a total of 20 hours required for the entire year (same as NHS). Don't worry; I'm going to give you many opportunities to rack up free hours. THIS is the official hour sheet for the Fall semester. You more if there aren't enough spaces. I accept summer hours!

4. If you're an ambitious one, I recommend that you take part in PVSA: The Presidential Volunteer Service Award (make sure to circle the option on your hour sheet)Our club is officially partnered with this organization so that we can provide you all with this exciting opportunity. If you are able to earn a certain number of hours in one year (6/7/14~6/6/15). Click HERE for award criteria and eligibility. If you're able to reach, let's say, 100 hours this year: that's a gold award for freshmen and a bronze award for everyone else. Click here to learn more about PVSA. I strongly encourage you all to take part in this. This is awesome to put down on your college applications!

5. Assistant officer positions have been finalized as well, so those applications are now open. Click HERE for the application. Next week, I'm going to ask who is planning on applying. Interviews are going to be held September 25th and September 26th during lunch in Mr. McKee's room (516). I'll make two lists and randomly assign applicants to one of the two days. If the day doesn't work for you, come on the other one. Don't forget to bring your application to the interview!

6. If you haven't already, please add yourself to the official Facebook group, and/or follow us on Twitter and Instagram.

7. Remember that OUR WEBSITE HAS EVERYTHING! If you're ever absent, or you need to link to a document, our website literally. Has. Everything. vhsunicefclub.blogspot.com!

9. Next week, we're having a guest speaker: Annie Kim, the Community Engagement Fellow in charge of all UNICEF clubs in Southern California! If you bring a friend to the next meeting who's interested in joining UNICEF, we will give you one free service hour. :-)

That was a lot! Have a great week!
