2/25/14 Meeting

1. The Tap Water Project campaign ends this Friday, February 28th! Be sure to go to uniceftapproject.org to continue helping out people in need of water.
  • You need to screen shot or take a picture of your results to be able to receive an hour.
  • Once you're done, please email your picture to us: valenciaUNICEF@gmail.com.
  • Remember: the first 12 hours must be consecutive. After that, feel free to add up the hours.
2. The Chick-fil-A fundraiser has been changed to Panda Express, because we aren't fully prepared to be able to fulfill the requirements of the former one. The fundraising event will take place on March 21st! Once we get the confirmation email, we will let you guys know of the exact time. It's a Friday, AND a minimum day! Hope to see you all there.

3. For those of you who haven't turned in your lollipop money yet, please do so ASAP! Due date is the week of Open House.

4. Speaking of which; Open House is March 27th! We are having a bake sale. An hour will be given for bringing treats (not store-bought). Or, you can earn hours by taking shifts at our club's booth (we will be posting those soon).

Contact us if you have any questions. Have a great rest of the week!

2/18/14 Meeting

Today's agenda:

1. Download and print your hour sheets HERE. Please be up-to-date with your hours. Due dates will be announced later. If you would like to know how many hours you have currently, please contact us. These hours and meeting attendance are crucial to maintain your membership in the club. HERE is a list of possibly community service activities here in Santa Clarita.

2. Remember that for your senior year, you will be wearing cords for UNICEF (a unique light blue cord). But in order for you to have one, consistent membership (hours and attendance) is needed. We'll be updating you senior about this in a couple months.

3. The Tap Water Project has officially begun for 2014! We're giving you one hour for every 12 hours that you can accomplish! The first twelve must be consecutive. But after that, you are allowed to add up hours from here and there. Click HERE for more information.

4. Open House is going to be in a few months! Heads up: we're going to be setting up shifts, so if you sign up for a shift we'll be giving you an hour. Open House is an awesome way for us to promote UNICEF to the incoming freshmen. We are planning to do a bake sale (yay), and we're definitely bringing back the box costume. We're going to be competing with other club booths, so it'll be fun!

5. We've contacted Chick-fil-A, so more information on that fundraiser will be posted as soon as possible!

6. We're trying our best to give you guys opportunities to fill up those hour sheets! :-)

Alrighty, have a nice week!

Get Off Your Phones with UNICEF'S Tap Project

The Tap Project (http://tap.unicefusa.org/) is officially under way, and UNICEF has announced a new project for the campaign: Go without your phone to help give clean water to children in need!

1. Visit http://uniceftapproject.org on your phone.
2. Begin the challenge right away to see how long you can go without your smartphone!
3. For every minute you don’t touch your phone, UNICEF's sponsors can fund one day of clean water for a child in need. Simple as that!

The annual Spring Soak is our official fundraiser for the Tap Project, but this is an awesome side project! It's a great reason to stay off your phones. ;)

We're giving one hour for every 12 hours you accomplish straight. GO GO GO !

2/11/14 Meeting

Yes, another successful group photo for the yearbook!

Today's announcements:

1. The lollipop fundraiser is officially under way! Valentine's Day is coming up, so... ;-) For those of you who have requested to sell lollipops, make sure to meet Eugenia at the beginning of lunch tomorrow by the book lockers to pick them up (unless you told us to bring it at the next meeting).

2. It seems like most are in favor of having a Chick-fil-A fundraiser during the month of March! Dates will be finalized soon.

3. We need to send all of our photos to Valencia's Yearbook team as soon as possible. Above is our most recent group picture; please let us know who is who, because yearbook needs to include all of our names in the caption.

4. We finally have a full group finalized for the M4D competition. Good luck, guys!

2/4/14 Meeting

Meeting recap:

1. We didn't have an official fundraiser for January because school started late into the month. But for February, WE'RE SELLING SEE'S CANDIES' LOLLIPOPS! In the spirit of Valentine's Day and such, haha. Let us know if you're interested in selling any, we've got five full boxes and the lollipops will be $1 each!

2. M4D! We have two girls who want to enter the contest! However, they need a boy member to fulfill the member requirements. PLEASE let me know if you're interested by the end of this week!

Nothing else, really. Have a nice week!

1/28/14 Meeting: First Meeting of 2nd Semester

We covered a ton!

1. This semester’s major fundraiser will be the Spring Soak, right before Spring Break. This just a heads up, but more information will be announced as we get closer to the date. It's going to be super fun, so look forward to it!

2. We still have 5 full boxes of See’s Candies lollipops left to sell throughout the semester. 100% of the profit will be going to UNICEF. Let any of the presidents know if you’re interested in getting some and selling them to people. We will also be trying to sell them during Open House, but we NEED to sell all 5 boxes by the end of the semester.

Quick reminder: Remember, UNICEF is an organization that aims to provide children all around the world with the resources that they need. Thus, as a high school club, our main goal/purpose is to raise money for the organization (last semester, we had three pretty successful fundraisers: Trick-or-Treat, Souplantation, and See's Candies). And that's what we're going to continue to do!

3. M4D! The M4D (Movies 4 Development) Competition is officially under way! As of right now, there is only one group interested in the video competition. We hope more of you are willing to participate ☺ Feel free to contact us if you're interested!

For those of you who don't know what M4D is, it is an annual competition held by UNICEF's High School Program. Every year, members in groups of three from UNICEF high school clubs all across the nation submit 60-second videos on a certain topic that UNICEF chooses. Three winning groups are able to attend UNICEF's Annual Meeting held in New York City! We're proud to say that Valencia High School has had a winning group for two straight years, so we really hope that we can keep up our streak.

This year, the topic is CHILD PROTECTION. Here are the basic rules:
- A group must consist of at least one boy and one girl.
- There can be more than one group submitting a video from one club.
- Every member does NOT have to be part of our club, but must register on Action Center before submitting the video (ask/message if you need help).
- Along with the video, you will be writing a SHORT-answer essay explaining the importance of UNICEF’s work in the area of Child Protection.

The deadline for submissions is MARCH 7TH!

For more information:

  1. Make sure to visit www.unicefusa.org/m4d
  2. Feel free to contact Chaereen, Ceridwen, Eugenia, or Aimiel.

This is last year's winning submission from our club, on the topic of global citizenship. No, the video does not have to be animated: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lTT6pkK7EU

This is an amazing opportunity for you to really get to know what kind of organization UNICEF is and what we, as a club, are working towards!

4. Last week, we had the “Human Rights Watch” club come in and speak to us about an opportunity to help protect children’s right. All you need to do is: click this attachment, scroll down to the last page, print out and sign the form, and allow the club to take a picture of you holding a sign (provided) on Tuesday at the end of the meeting. For more information, just look up “Human Rights Watch.” UNICEF supports it as well. We hope many of you will participate!

5. You can still turn in your hour sheets to count for the PVSA award! Remember, this semester is 20 hours for membership commitment.
