Hi UNICEF members!!

Sorry that this meeting recap is a little late :( but Monday was our LAST meeting of this school year!! This year went by so fast, but we were able to achieve so much. We raised over $800 for important issues affecting children worldwide. We were also able to raise awareness about global issues and contribute to our community this year!! On Monday, we discussed the officer board for the 2018-2019 school year:

Co-Presidents: Angie, Lily, & Sanjana
VP of Communications: Ava
VP of Finance: Kylie
Secretary: Yumi
Director of Arts: Nessia
Director of Membership: Brenda

Congrats to all the new officers!! Thanks to everyone who applied, and if you didn't get the officer position you wanted, you can still apply to be an assistant officer next year. :)

Thank you to Neha and Brinly for being the most amazing and legendary presidents ever. Also, thank you to Mr. McKee for letting us use his room and for being one of the coolest human beings on this planet. Congrats to all the UNICEF seniors who are graduating this week and thank you for contributing so much to this club. Have a stress-free summer and see you guys next YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Meeting Recap: 4/16

Hi UNICEF members!!

Here's a recap of today's meeting:

1. There will be a fundraiser at Pieology on Monday, April 23rd. Be sure to go because some of the proceeds will support our club!

2. Just a reminder: you need 10 service hours per semester to be a UNICEF member. HERE is the link to the hour sheet. These hours will be due at the end of the semester. If you're doing PVSA, be sure to talk to Neha or Brinly.

3. We are taking officer applications for next year!! The link to the applications can be found HERE; print it out and bring it to the next meeting. If you're a junior who's interested in being president next year, your application is due this week because presidents will be chosen early. Email vhsunicef@gmail.com with any questions :)

4. During the meeting today, we talked about the current crisis in Syria. The civil war in Syria has been going on for years, and the Syrian regime has used chemical weapons on its own citizens, many of them children. On Friday, the United States and other major world powers conducted airstrikes on Syria in response to their use of chemical weapons. Nearly 3 million children have been forced to flee their homes, and many families have lost everything. UNICEF is working to support Syrian refugees and provide affected Syrians with education, water, and immunizations. We weren't able to play them during class, but if you're interested in learning more about this issue, watch these videos: (1, 2, 3). Also, this website is run by UNICEF and has more information about the children of Syria.

Also, as a club, we should do something to help Syria. We may be worrying about things like prom and AP tests, but kids our age in Syria are worried about whether or not they'll wake up to another bombing or survive a chemical attack. It's important that we raise awareness and help the global community. VHS UNICEF has plans to make an informative video and host an event with West Ranch UNICEF. If you have any ideas or are interested in helping out, talk to one of the officers.

See you guys next meeting! (Monday, April 23rd, in Mr. McKee's room)

4/9/18: Meeting Recap: OFFICER POSITIONS!

Hi UNICEF members! I hope you guys had a great spring break. Here's a recap of today's meeting:

1. If you want to buy a UNICEF shirt, bring 5 dollars to the next meeting. You can also buy them next year but they will probably be more expensive. They are blue and say "valencia UNICEF" on the front and have a Viking on the back. Definitely a great fashion statement 11/10 would recommend.

2. OFFICER POSITIONS: This year is coming to an end and we need to pick new officers for next year!!  This meeting, we talked about which positions are available and how to apply. If you're interested in being an officer next here, print and fill out THIS form and bring it to the next meeting. Interviews will be held at a later date. If you're interested in being PRESIDENT next year, please fill out your form as soon as possible. Next year's presidents will be decided sooner than all the other officers because they will be involved in choosing the other officers. Here is a description of all the officer positions available next year. Good luck to everyone applying!

*To be an officer, you need to have a current or cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and also be a member of VHS UNICEF.

PRESIDENT: There are most likely going to be 2 co-presidents next year. Our current co-presidents, Neha and Brinly, talked about their experience this year. Being president is a demanding job and you will need to put in hours outside of school. The president oversees all the other officers and is in contact with the UNICEF High School Clubs program. Also, the presidents lead all the meetings.

VP OF COMMUNICATIONS: The VP of communications updates social media (Twitter and Instagram) and sends out Reminds about meetings. They will work with the other officers and help lead meetings.

VP OF FINANCE: The VP of finance organizes fundraisers. They will have to be in contact with local businesses and keep track of the money that we get.

SECRETARY: The secretary is responsible for taking notes during meetings and updating this blog. Speaking from personal experience, this job is super fun!!!! The secretary needs to not be a slacker and update blog posts on time. Also, they can make cool headers for the blog posts.

DIRECTOR OF MEMBERSHIP: The director of membership keeps track of sign-in sheets and makes sure that members are attending meetings. They need to know how to use Google Sheets.

DIRECTOR OF ARTS: The director of arts takes pictures and makes posters for the club, and works with other officers.

More detailed descriptions of the officer positions are available on the application linked above. Everyone is encouraged to apply!! Assistant officer positions will also be available next year. Our next meeting will be Monday, April 23th. We'll be taking a break from meetings in May because of AP tests, and then we will probably have a potluck or party. Follow our social media at @vhsUNICEF (Instagram) and @valenciaUNICEF (Twitter) for club photos and important updates. See you next meeting!!!

Meeting Recap: 2/26/18

Hi UNICEF members!!

Here's a recap of today's meeting:

1. There is a Menchie's fundraiser TODAY, February 26th, and 20% of the proceeds go to VHS UNICEF. It is the Menchie's by LA Fitness and the Habit, and it ends at 10 pm so there's still time to get some yogurt and support our club!! The flier was sent out on the Remind last night. You can get service hours if you show one of the officers your receipt.

2. If you went to our Habit fundraiser a few weeks ago, bring your receipt next meeting to get service hours. Also, a reminder that everyone needs 10 service hours per semester, and if you need a service hour sheet, they can be found here. If you're having trouble finding places to get service hours, talk to our co-president Neha.

3. If you want to buy a UNICEF t-shirt they are $5, and we only have a few left. They are blue and say "valencia UNICEF" on the front and have a Viking on the back. 11/10 a great fashion statement definitely would recommend. However, if you are going to be in UNICEF next year, we will be getting new shirts so you can also wait if you want.

4. Also we are going to be collabing with West Ranch's UNICEF club to make a video and spread awareness about human trafficking. This is a great opportunity to get involved!!!!! If you're interested in helping out, contact Neha.

Our next meeting will be Monday, March 12th, 2018, in Mr. Mckee's room (516)Follow our social media at @vhsunicef (Instagram) and @valenciaUNICEF (Twitter) for club photos and important updates. See you next meeting!!!!! :)))

Meeting Recap: 2/5/18

Hi UNICEF members!!!

First of all, thank you to everyone who went to the Habit fundraiser last week. :) Our second meeting of the semester was today in Mr. McKee's room. Here's a recap of today's meeting.

1. January was Human Trafficking Awareness Month but we're going to extend that awareness into February!!! Today we watched a video by the US Institute Against Sex Trafficking about children who are forced into sex trafficking. Although many people think human trafficking is a problem that happens in the developing world, the truth is, human trafficking (especially sex trafficking) is a huge problem in the United States.

2. You can sign a petition against the trafficking of children HERE. This petition is trying to get 100,000 signatures to the President and Congress to establish a White House Office to Combat Human Trafficking. You can take a screenshot of your signature and send it to valenciaunicef@gmail.com by the next meeting for ONE service hour.

3. To raise awareness about human trafficking, we are going to create a video and make a handout. You should contact our co-president Neha if you're interested in helping out.

4. Next meeting, we will be writing letters to Congress (!!!) to ask our representatives to take action on the human trafficking of children. Be there!!

We will send out a Remind about our next meeting, and it will be in Mr. McKee's room as always.  (516). Follow our social media at @vhsunicef (Instagram) and @valenciaUNICEF (Twitter) for club photos and important updates. See you at the next meeting!!!!! :)

Hi UNICEF members!! I hope you guys had a relaxing winter break and a stress free start to the semester. Today was our first UNICEF meeting of the semester, in Mr. McKee's room as always. If you weren't here or want to catch up on what happened, here's a recap of what we discussed at the meeting.

1. January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month, so we'll be focusing on that topic for our next few meetings. We showed this video about a teen migrant sold into prostitution, and in future meetings, we will be discussing how to raise awareness and help victims of human trafficking.

2. There will be a fundraiser at The Habit on January 29th from 4 pm - 10 pm to raise money for our club. If you go and bring a receipt to the next meeting, you will receive TWO service hours. (Service hour sheets can be found here)

3. If you are having trouble finding ways to get service hours, talk to our president, Neha.

4. Also, there will be new opportunities to get involved with UNICEF this semester. If you are interested in discussing a certain issue during club meetings, helping out with a video that we are making, or have any ideas, you should also talk to our president, Neha

Our next meeting will be on Monday, February 5th, in Mr. McKee's room (516). Follow our social media at @vhsunicef (Instagram) and @valenciaUNICEF (Twitter) for club photos and important updates. See you at the next meeting!!!!
