Thanks so much to all members for raising money that will go towards helping underprivileged children globally.

2. We have a Panda Express fundraiser TODAY!!!! Go to the Panda Express on Newhall Ranch (by Chipotle) any time today, November 20th, and some of the proceeds will be donated to VHS Unicef. 11/06/17: Meeting Recap

Hi, UNICEF members! Here’s a recap of today’s meeting:

1. Trick or Treat boxes will be due next meeting, November 20th. You will receive one service hour for each box turned in. We’re partnering with Key Club to raise money for underprivileged children globally. Our goal is $3,000, so be sure to donate any spare change you have and spread the word!!

2. We’re having a fundraiser at Panda Express this month on November 20th. Please go there and tell your friends so we can support our club! :))

3. During our meeting, Sanjana showed this video about how climate change affects children around the world. From natural disasters and pollution to the creeping impacts of rising sea levels and changing rainfall patterns, climate change threatens children’s most basic rights, including their health, access to food and water, education – even their survival. UNICEF is working to reduce the impact of climate change on vulnerable children by building natural disaster proof schools, raising money for relief efforts, protecting vital water supplies, and empowering children to take action.

4. If you haven’t been getting text messages for UNICEF on Remind, please contact our co-presidents or VP of Communications, Lily, so you can be added and informed about future meetings/events.

Our next meeting will be Monday, November 20th, in Mr. McKee’s room (516). See you then!

10/23/17: Meeting Recap

Hi UNICEF members!!

Here’s a recap of today’s meeting:

1. We introduced our assistant officers! Nessia (Arts), Kylie (Fundraising), Ava (Membership), and Hailey (Communications) will assist our current officers.

2. It’s October, so its time for Trick or Treat for UNICEF!! This year, UNICEF is partnering with Key Club and local elementary schools to raise money. Our goal is $3,000 to help children in need. This video encapsulates what Trick or Treat for UNICEF is all about; it raises money to provide food, water, medication, and education for underprivileged children in third-world countries. We passed out ToT boxes at our meeting, and if you weren’t here, you can pick one up in Mr. McKee’s room.

3. We have a fundraiser coming up at Chipotle on October 30th, from 4 pm to 8 pm, and we also have another one at Panda Express in November, which we’ll let you guys know more about at our next meeting. Please go to these fundraisers to support our club!

4 . During our discussion today, Lily showed this video and talked about the crisis in Myanmar and what we can do to help. If you weren’t aware, an ethnic minority group known as the Rohingya, a predominantly Muslim community, is being persecuted by Myanmar’s majority Buddhist government. The military is forcing the Rohingya out of their homes, burning down villages, and killing innocent people in what has been called an “ethnic cleansing” and “genocide”. Thousands of Rohingya people are fleeing to nearby Bangladesh, where they are treated as refugees and stateless people. UNICEF is providing education and assistance in refugee camps and working to raise awareness about the plight of the Rohingya. If you’re interested in advocating for this cause and helping Rohingya children escape violence, you can donate to UNICEF here`.

Our next meeting will be Monday, November 6th, in Mr. McKee's room (516). If you haven't followed our social media yet, please do so at @vhsunicef (Instagram)and @valenciaUNICEF (Twitter), for club photos and important updates.

10/9: Meeting Recap

Hi UNICEF members!!

If you didn't have a chance to sign in today, here's the link. goo.gl/HeExjM

Here' s a recap of today's meeting:

1. We have an opportunity to volunteer at the Santa Clarita Marathon on November 5th. There are shifts available from 7:30 am - 1:30 pm. This is an easy way to get community service hours, which can be used for NHS as well. If you're interested in signing up for a shift, please contact our president, Neha. More information will be available at our next meeting.

2. We have a Chipotle fundraiser on October 30th, from 4 pm to 8 pm. Please go & tell your friends to help support our club and enjoy some burritos at the same time!! You can show your receipt at the next meeting to get one service hour.

3. It's time for Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, where instead of candy, we collect donations for underprivileged children. At an upcoming meeting, we'll pass out boxes in which you can collect coins. Our goal for this year is to collect $300 to further UNICEF's message and benefit disadvanaged kids.

4. Assistant officer applications are now available here. Assistant officers help current officers and learn more about their position in hopes of getting that position in the future, and anyone is welcome to apply. Interviews will be held next week at lunch.

5. At our meeting, Angie showed this video and led a discussion about how getting an education is difficult for children in the developing world. Things that we take for granted, like a classroom, school supplies, and restrooms at school, are privileges in the developing world. 263 million children are out of school globally, and barriers to education prevent children from reaching their full potential. This is why organizations like UNICEF are so important; they are dedicated to making sure that all children can enjoy their right to an education through building schools, training teachers, providing supplies, and helping people see the value of educating every child.

Our next meeting will be Monday, October 23rd, in Mr. McKee's room (516). If you haven't followed our social media yet, please do so at @vhsunicef (Instagram) and @valenciaUNICEF (Twitter), for club photos and important updates.

9/18/17: Meeting Recap

Hi everyone!

The first UNICEF meeting of the year was held on Monday (9/18) at lunch. We had a great turnout and are so excited for this year! We discussed our goals for the year, fundraisers, attendance, assistant officer positions, and more. Here's a recap of Monday's meeting:

1. We introduced UNICEF and our officer board.

(From left to right): Back row: Riley Seow (Director of Arts), Neha Vyas (Co-President), Brinly Xavier (Co-President), Ashita Tanwar (VP of Finance). Front row: Lily Ren (VP of Communications), Michelle Choi (Director of Public Relations), Angie Wu (Director of Membership), Sanjana Manjeshwar (Secretary)

2. We played this video to highlight UNICEF's mission and our goals for the club. UNICEF strives to protect and support children's rights worldwide, through fundrasing, advocacy, and education. We then asked questions about and discussed the video, and handed out prizes to those who answered a question correctly.

3. Fundraisers and volunteer opportunities are coming up, so be sure to get involved. We have an upcoming fundraiser at Chipotle, and an opportunity to volunteer at the Santa Clarita Marathon in November. Because we are committed to helping our community and giving back, UNICEF requires 10 service hours per semester. NHS service hours can be used for UNICEF service as well.

4.  If you ever miss a meeting or need a document, please always check this website, vhsunicef.blogspot.com! We post a recap after every meeting.

Our next meeting will be held on Monday, October 9th, at lunch in room 516 (McKee). Hope to see you there! Also, if you haven't already, be sure to follow us on Instagram (@vhsunicef) and Twitter (@valenciaUNICEF) for club photos and important updates.

Meeting Recap: 3/6/17

Hello everyone! Thank you for coming to our meeting today. We covered many important topics today:
  1. This month is World Water Month, in which we raise awareness for those who trudge for 8 hours a day to find water for their villages. Here is a story about Aysha, a 13-year-old girl from Ethiopia who journeys through this arduous task.
    • The UNICEF Tap Project has unfortunately come to a close, so we will not be doing that this year. Here is an article about UNICEF's achievements for this successful event.
  2. We have a fundraiser for See's Candies that will be due by the end of April. For every 2 orders, you will get one service hour. We strongly encourage all of you to participate -- remember: all the funds will go towards helping those in need of clean water! Contact valenciaunicef@gmail.com or Jane Yu for more info.
  3. Officer applications are up on our website under the resources tab. These applications will be due on FRIDAY MARCH 17. Interviews will take place during the week of March 20-24, and we will announce results on MONDAY MARCH 27.
  4. If you are considering PVSA, which is a nationally-recognized volunteer award, please contact our email for details.
  5. Tomorrow MARCH 7 during LUNCH at the TRIANGLE, our club, Help 4 Refugees, the Humanitarian Network, and Student Task Force will hold UNITY DAY, in which we talk about topics relating to this subject. If you do plan to come, wear a white T-shirt, and we will give you ONE SERVICE HOUR.
  6. Finally, if you have notebooks, packs of blue pens, and packs of highlighters, please donate them to ROOM 516 by MONDAY MARCH 20. You will get 1.5 hours for UNICEF and NHS.
Our next meeting will be on MONDAY MARCH 13. See you there!

Meeting Recap: 2/6/16

Thank you for coming to our meeting! This month is Humanitarian Action Month, so each week, we will be covering emergency relief topics ranging from hurricanes to Ebola.
  1. To start off with this month's theme, we talked about the aftermath of our most recent disasters, as well as how the victims are recovering, in Hurricane Matthew and the war in Eastern Aleppo
  2. We are partnering with the Humanitarian Network with school supplies donation to benefit the Girls Guide Association of Sri Lanka. They need notebooks, packs of blue pens, and packs of highlighters -- donate 3 of whatever item you choose and receive 1.5 hours for both UNICEF and NHS. Please contact the president, Mithara Kaluarachchi, for more details.
  3. If you donated books (1 book  = 1 hr) or have signed the petition to fight against human trafficking in January (1/2 hours), please bring your hour sheets, so that we can sign those
  4. Lastly, we are on the lookout for potential officers for next year's executive board. We will hand out the application in March and finalize all positions by April, so that we can train those elected.
Our next meeting will be on Monday February 13 during lunch in Room 516. See you there!

Meeting Recap: 1/23/16

Hello everyone! Thanks for coming to our first meeting of the semester. Here are the topics we talked about today:
  • January is Human Trafficking Month, and we watched a video and displayed an article for this topic. To recap, human trafficking includes violence upon victims, abuse, sexual exploitation, forced labor and the use of children as soldiers.
    • Although advocates like UNICEF strive to raise awareness and improve the conditions for these children, 50 million children are still forcibly displaced as a result of war, and it is up to us to raise awareness and pledge to end trafficking. We encourage you to sign this pledge to fight against this crime.
  • Also, we are partnering with the Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital for book donations. If you have books that are gently used, please put them in a bag, along with your name and number of books. One book counts for one UNICEF hour, and these donations will be due NEXT MEETING.
    • If you're a senior who will be graduating this year, the minimum requirement for a graduation cord will be 10 service hours, so you may want to keep this service project in mind :)
  • Speaking of hours, the minimum requirement for this semester is 10 hours. You can find the hour sheets under the resources tab.
  • Give yourselves a pat on the back because we received the Spirit Paddle from VHS Cheer for raising over $1000 for Trick or Treat!! Thank you guys, always.
Our next meeting will be MONDAY JANUARY 30th during LUNCH in ROOM 516. See you there!
